- The California Fair Pay to Play Act, which will allow California college athletes to secure professional representation and receive pay for use of their name, image, and likeness beginning in 2023, has rocked college sports. Lawmakers in many other states and Congress are moving to take similar actions. After the adoption of the Fair Pay to Play Act, the National College Players Association and NFL Players Association announced a collaboration to bring group licensing representation that may generate college athlete compensation from video games, merchandise, TV broadcast and more. In response to mounting pressure, the NCAA recently announced an intention to allow college athletes to receive more than what is currently permissible. NCAA’s announcement was received with mixed messages. Will it be enough to address the issue? Is the current “Collegiate Model” worth saving or is it time for change?
